They tell my story..
The theme of this international women’s day in 2023 is celebrating the women who tell our stories.
There are so many women that tell my story. All the women in the world, in a way or another tell my story, the story of womanhood, motherhood, the account of my mistakes, failures, struggles but also trials and errors, growth and victories.
We tell each other’s stories because we have enough love to give to everyone and everything, we nourish and care for others with love and this is what we know best. We are strong and resilient but fragile and vulnerable at the same time.
Our stories are partly defined by our geography because the women who share the same culture and live in the same country, share a lot of similar life experiences.
I was brought up a proud Iranian woman, sharing the same cultural traditions and beliefs as many other women in my country of origin.
When I was very young, my country went through some huge turbulence and an earthquake like shift that shook the earth underneath us. It completely disfigured the way we lived our lives. It was almost a dust that was powdered over us, covered us and at the same time tried to transform our identity inside out.
But this dust never settled and always stayed in the air. It was as if it stayed on the surface. Unfortunately, like all dust, it was suffocating and so many including myself had to flee but so many others had to stay and lived through this unsettling dust.
They tell my story but also a noble story of courage and dignity, the story of humanity, tolerance, compassion, suffering and more.
I am a woman and my story is told by each and everyone of you who had to swallow the pride and forgo the blessing of living in her ancestorial land, the land that belonged to her and leave behind all she once loved, to rebuild again what was taken away from her.
Yes, you tell my story and I tell yours and I am so proud of our story, sister.
May this beautiful day be the day you remember what our story is and why someone needs to tell it to the world.
